Go behind the scenes of Shoot The Moon mural painting with Mark Kowalchuk

When Volcom opened a new store in Calgary recently they called artist Mark Kowalchuk in to paint a massive mural. Here Mark takes us behind the scenes in words, photos and an awesome timelapse of his creating the whole thing!

Mark:

When volcom opened a second store in Market Mall Calgary they thought of me to paint this really weird floating curved wall.  I have been doing some art for volcom for the last couple years and I have also live painted at their other store opening, previously. This wall was a bit of a beast and not easy to paint on,  25ft wide, 10ft off the ground and curved over my head with bulbs that burned my retina’s.  My original idea for the wall was going to be a big surf wave with a surfer holding the stone in the wave but I thought being a Calgary shop surfing doesn’t fit our style we are more a skateboard city.  I am also really into space right now and since the wall is up in the air a blue skater in space just made sense to me.

I put a few hidden messages in the design as I always do but they are a bit harder to figure out unless you have my weird brain.  Thanks to volcom for supporting me, they are a hive of amazing artists that support art.  Also thanks to Kristen Pineau who called me to paint this and Simon Kubbinga who filmed and edited the time lapse.

Never stop creating.
