Surf Glowing Bioluminescent Waves In The Maldives

Surf Glowing Bioluminescent Waves In The Maldives

Wow. This is about as cool as it can get. We just found out it's actually possible to surf blue glowing fluorescent waves!

Science or magic, it's almost impossible to tell. And it doesn't make it any easier once you learn that this is actually not that rare a phenomenon.

The phenomenon is called bioluminescence and it's caused by glowing phytoplankton and the presence of microscopic algae that give off the eerie glowing blue light. To surfers, it's also known as "red tide".

Only visible at night, the glowing ocean can sometimes even result in bioluminescent waves, like this past January down in the Maldives. Man, how cool would that be to see?! If you ever get the chance don't hesitate and get out there!

Check out these amazing photos and scroll down to see some really cool videos of the phenomenon, including one of a glowing wave being surfed!
