O'Death = Lord of the Rings meets a hoedown

O'Death, Elliott Brood, Hoots & Hellmouth @ Sala Rossa
I know you're asking "WTF is O'Death?" It's Lord of the Rings meets a hoedown. Officially, it's goth/country/punk straight out of New York. Throw in a little bluegrass to get a more accurate picture.
O'Death is quite the experience live. Five guys on stage, two shirtless that turn into 3 shirtless. The energy this band gives off is fierce to say the least. Their onstage presence is huge. You can't take your eyes off of them. Individually, each member is a character. Gabe Darling can play a mean banjo and ukulele. Greg Jamie has is stoic and has an unique voice that you can't describe; screechy yet melodic. Davd Rb starts the show by standing on his seat displaying his half nakedness, tattoos and massive attitude. Bob Psycior plays his fiddle down to the last string and Othar the Tooth Collector on bass is vehement in more ways than one. Actually, the whole band is fierce.
They weren't the headliners. Personally, I think O'Death stole the show. This band is so memorable that I've planned a trip to NYC (Bowry Ballroom on December 5th). I just didn't get enough. I even bought merch. I'm proudly wearing the only O'Death hoodie in Montreal. I love the looks of puzzlement on people's faces when they realize what it says, especially at the office. Sure, I could have asked the PR reps for samplers etc. but sometimes you just want to support the band. At least I know maximum profits go directly to the band if I buy merch at the show. What says, "I support you" than buying enough for them to gas up to get to the next venue. It's a hard life touring and bands just don't don't make money selling cds anymore. Yes, I respect the band that much to buy merch.
I should probably mention that there were three bands playing. Hoots & Hellmouth were an enjoyable opener; good energetic indie bluegrass to start the mood and Elliott Brood closed the evening with their intense folk acoustic rock.
Often, I also get the "how the F do you find this music?" This time, an art director I met on blip.fm (my current addiction), sang very high praises of O'Death and insisted I check them out. I have to admit, no regrets. O'Death is one of the best music discoveries of the year.
